Tour skating is a fantastic and safe way to experience & enjoy Lake Saimaa in winter! One of Finland’s longest skating tracks kept open on natural ice is found in Punkaharju, maximum length of 17 km. There are many break points on the track, a campfire place, a Pancake Café along the way, equipment rental and restaurants. The skating track consists of 3 routes when all routes are open, the tracks are maintained daily.
The highlight of the skating route is a skating track that goes around Valkialampi, a pond in the middle of Punkaharju Ridge area.
2025-2026 MAIN ROUTES, UP TO 17 KM:
*5 km route to Haataansaari island to campfire spot
*8 km from Harjun Portti to Siplahti (via Kruunupuisto) and back
*2 km route around Kaarnalahti bay
*2 km route around Valkialampi pond
Also, the aim is to make an additional 9 km route Siplahti-Sumpunlahti (back and forth) around February – making this route is affected by the amount of snow during winter and ice conditions.

The starting point of the track is from Holiday Resort Harjun Portti, which also maintains the tracks daily. Equipment Rental available at the starting point, where you can rent tour skate packages, kick-sleds and many more winter equipment.
Tracks are usually opened late December/early January and will be open to the last days of the winter (late March usually), the personnel of the resort checks the routes daily, so you can skate safely along the route even in the last days of winter.
Lusto is a fun place to visit with children! The miniatures in the exhibitions are interesting for all ages, as they provide an easy and illustrative way to explore the forest and the significance of forests in the life of Finns. Lusto also has artifacts and locations where you can touch and experiment with things yourself, for example you can practise identifying trees.
A special exhibition for families with children: This Is Just Play – Wooden Toys and Forest Games opens on May 9, 2026.

Lusto is easy to visit by car, bus or train. The Lusto train stop is only about 100 meters from Lusto’s entrance.

The guided tours to the Arboretum of the Finnish Natural Resources Institute give the visitors a chance to familiarize themselves with different tree species. There are 54 coniferous and 48 broad-leaved species in the area. The tour will also take the visitors to see the tallest tree in the whole of Finland.
